Final Fantasy XIII Had "Real" DLC, But Now It Doesn't

1up.com - Tue, 2010-09-07 22:01

Like we mentioned earlier, Final Fantasy XIII's Xbox 360 port has just been officially announced in Japan. (It's one of several news bits leaking out of a conference Microsoft is holding over there at the moment, an event where they're also announcing the Kinect's price and release date in Japan.)

The news is sad indeed for PS3 fanboys over there, but even the rest of have something to be a little distraught about: The dev team was apparently planning extensive downloadable content for FFXIII, but it all got cut.

"We were planning to make some DLC, but that plan wound up not happening," director Motomu Toriyama told Famitsu magazine in this week's issue. "I'm sorry!" (Toriyama was answering a query about how he said before FFXIII's Japanese release that PS3 owners should "hold on to their saves from the end of the game" for a surprise down the line.)

Suda51-Mikami EA Project Finally Getting Unveiled

1up.com - Tue, 2010-09-07 21:25

For over two years now, we've been aware that Shinji Mikami and Goichi Suda (aka Suda51) have been working on an original game for Electronic Arts. What we haven't known is, erm, everything else. (Some reports have called it an "action horror" title...but who knows, really?)

All that's about to change soon, thankfully. EA announced in Japan today that Mikami and Suda's new game is finally going to be revealed to the public soon. The venue: EA Tokyo Showcase 2010, an event the publisher will be holding at Japan's capital on September 15, one day before the Tokyo Game Show's doors open.

EA previous announced that several games will be announced at the event -- now we know the identity of one of them, at least. Stay tuned.

Miles Edgeworth Rides Again

1up.com - Tue, 2010-09-07 21:15

Capcom announced in this week's issue of Famitsu magazine that a sequel to Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, the Nintendo DS adventure released here last February, is in the works. The new game, called Gyakuten Kenji 2 in Japanese, lacks a release date for the time being, but a playable demo will be available at Capcom's booth in the Tokyo Game Show next week. (In Japanese, of course. Sorry.)

As before, the adventure will star brilliant, grumpy prosecutor Miles Edgeworth (the main villain in the very first Ace Attorney game -- man, does time fly) as he collects evidence, questions witnesses, and attempts to find the culprit in a series of cases. There'll be some new gameplay gimmicks -- there always are with Ace Attorney sequels -- and Capcom's revealed that one of the cases will make a return visit to Gourd Lake, the location in the first Ace Attorney where Edgeworth was involved in a weird murder plot that very nearly landed him in the slammer.

More info as it comes.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3 Coming

1up.com - Tue, 2010-09-07 21:02

Koei has taken the first wraps off Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3 in this week's spate of Japanese game magazines. The new title, which doesn't have a firm release date yet, is being developed for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and will feature online gameplay on both consoles.

Like with the previous games in the series, DW: Gundam is a one-versus-ten-million action game that features giant robots from the Gundam anime shows, as opposed to the usual ancient Chinese generals seen in the main Dynasty Warriors series. Besides the new online play, the biggest new feature in DW:G3 is the visuals -- Koei producer Hisashi Koinuma and his team are going for a cel-shaded graphic look this time around.

"We deliberately tried to change up the visual style this time," Koinuma told Famitsu magazine in an interview. [Co-producer Yoshitaka] Goto suggested that cel anime-style graphics would be the way to go this time, and that's something nobody's ever attempted in a Gundam game up to now, so it piqued my interest."

Dissidia: Final Fantasy Gets Sequel

1up.com - Tue, 2010-09-07 20:33

Square Enix had two devastating pieces of news for Japanese gamers today. One, Final Fantasy XIII is coming out on the Xbox 360 in Japan on December 16. (That means nothing to us, of course, since we've had the 360 version since launch day. It's a big deal to console warriors in Japan, though, because Square Enix president Yoichi Wada swore up and down on both Japanese game media and his own Twitter account that the 360 port would never, ever come out in that nation. Game biz executives breaking promises? Well, I never!)

More interesting to us overseas gamers, though, is this: In this week's spate of Japan game mags, Square Enix announced a sequel to Dissidia: Final Fantasy, the PSP fighter/action game that pits characters from across the FF series against each other. Titled Dissidia: Duodecim Final Fantasy 012, the title is coming exclusively to the PSP, once again, with a 2011 Japan release in the works.

Not much about what's new gameplay-wise has been revealed with Duodecim yet, but Square Enix is promising a raft of new characters to appear in the sequel. Two have been revealed so far: Lightning from FFXIII (expected, of couse), and Kain Highwind, who debuted in Final Fantasy IV and was last seen acting like a nutter in The After Years.

Warren Spector First Pitched Sci-fi Game to Disney

1up.com - Tue, 2010-09-07 16:48

When Deus Ex creator Warren Spector originally met with Disney, it wasn't to discuss Epic Mickey. Instead, Spector was apparently set on selling a sci-fi game that could potentially have been seen as a spirtual follow-up to Deus Ex (via Develop).

Spector said he was leery about meeting with Disney to pitch the concept, since he was convinced that they wouldn't be interested.

"I went into the meeting room, pitched them my stuff, and sure enough I was right. The guys started texting in the middle of the meeting. I was convinced they were not interested," he said.

FMV Adventure Starring MST3K Cast, Peter Graves Nearing Release After a Decade

1up.com - Tue, 2010-09-07 15:58

A bit of living history will become available to PC gamers in November. Strategy First is preparing to release Darkstar: The Interactive Movie, an FMV adventure game that has been in the works for roughly a decade.

Billed as an adventure game in the style of Myst featuring 360-degree panoramics and more than 13 hours of video, it stars a good chunk of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 cast as well as actor Peter Graves in his final role.

The story is set 300 years in the future, with the main character awakening from a lengthy hibernation. MST3K creator Joel Hodgson stars as the commander, with Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff and J. Elvis Weinstein also filling roles. Graves, who was a frequent targets thanks to appearances in films such as Attack of the Eye Creatures, serves as the narrator.

Uwe Boll's Next Film Tackles Auschwitz

Infamous videogame-to-film director Uwe Boll (BloodRayne, Far Cry, House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark) will expand his subject matter beyond games and into history with his next film, Auschwitz.

The film is, of course, based on its namesake network of German concentration camps where over 1 million people were killed between 1942 and 1944.
