glibc-2.3.5 released

Well glibc-2.3.5 has recently been released, and it seems like just yesterday 2.3.4 was out... and now there's already talk of 2.3.6 coming soon with all the gcc4 related patches. Quite frankly, anyone trying to use gcc4 for glibc is just asking for trouble, but I digress.

2.3.5 is mostly a bugfix release, so nothing extremely exciting worth mentioning. I may merge in davem's tls patch for sparc64 tls support into the ebuild if anyone pushes for it, but seeing as how I'm probably the only one who'll make use of it, I'll probably just wait for 2.3.6 which will likely have it.

Since the changeset is rather small over the last release, I plan on keeping this in package.mask for about another week, so please let me know of any regressions you may encounter.

WinTV PVR 500

I got my PVR500 from Newegg last week, and I finally got around to adding it to my Media box a few days ago. Judging by comments on the ivtv-devel list, I had high hopes that it was in a usable state, but alas I was incorrect. The image quality is a bit poor, and if I set the resolution to anything less than 720 in width, the right portion of the image is cropped rather than resizing the image down to fit. It looks like it's going to be a while before I finally have my ReplayTV replacement...

ALSA on sparc

Well, yesterday I spent some time debugging sound on my Ultra10. I threw in an old pci sound card I had lying around (ens1371 based), and all the remaining alsa issues I've been having seem to be cleared up.

The ioctl32 bugs were cleared out in alsa-driver-1.0.8, but <alsa-lib-1.0.8 still had some ioctl problems. With alsa-{lib,driver}-1.0.8 and my PCI sound card, all native ALSA apps are functioning properly. I'm no longer getting messages about bad ioctl calls with 32bit apps or 64bit apps.

Additionally, with the sbus cs4231, all issues present in 32bit applications are present in their 64bit counterparts, so it seems the ioctl32 code has been cleaned out well enough to work on machines other than amd64.

Bush Hates Science

Maybe since he doesn't understand science, he feels the need to prevent everyone ELSE from learning about it. He has just announced intentions to cut NASA's annual budget from $75 million to $53 million in the proposed 2006 budget. Let's take a moment to consider how SMALL $53 million really is...

$140 million - Bill Gates' weekly earnings [1]
$2.2 billion - B-2 Bomber [2]
$200 million - F-22 Fighter [2]
$730 million - 2004 budget for war-on-drugs in the Andean region [3]
$380 billion - 2004 US military budget [3]
$41 billion - 2004 US homeland security budget [3]
$7.4 billion - 2003 US missile defense research budget [4]

Starcraft

I played Starcraft today for the first time in a long while. It started out as a way to test point2play on the TV computer, but it turned into me playing the first 2 missions of Broodwar on the big screen TV. God that was fun. The cool things is that once we get the wireless mouse and keyboard, Ryan will be able to use that computer in the living room to join in our LAN games instead of the poor old box in his bedroom...

I'm getting the itch to install other classics on that box too. I should try getting some NES, SNES, and Genesis emulators up as well.

9-11-01

September 11, 2001. 830 PDT. My alarm clock goes off. KQED. I hear the sounds, but I do not listen to the words. I am too tired. I lie in my bed, exhausted. The few hours of sleep I had do not seem nearly enough. I don't need to wake up just yet; my flight lesson is at 11, so I simply allow myself to fall back to sleep. Just a few more minutes. The radio remains on.

Time drifts by. Minutes slip away as I lie in my bed dreaming. The sounds of the radio begin, at last, to pierce my thoughts in disjoint segments. "New York," "Airplane," "World Trade Center," "Pentagon," "Fire," "Attack," "Terrorism," "Collapse," "Panic."

I wonder

I wonder if Bebel Gilberto would marry me...

love actually

love actually is all around us

unrequited love

if unrequited love was the only option... would you rather love someone who did not return it, or be the target of someone's affection?

I would rather love... I don't think I could bear the guilt from the pain I would cause someone else for not being able to give them what they desire. If I were to love, and it was not reciprocated, the pain would be my own doing. I would rather be in pain than cause another to be in pain.

long time no type

So, it's been quite some time since I wrote... I'm not sure why I haven't updated, but I haven't... things have been good lately. I'm actually at my parents' house tonight so I can go camping for the weekend (leaving tomorrow)... I should get to sleep soon...

Anyways, been enjoying my summer... it's odd being a graduate... well almost a graduate. I still need to take a few classes at Vista in the fall, but other than that, I'm all done... I walked! The whole ordeal just happened way too fast. I wasn't even paying attention really... I guess I'm lucky other people were diligent about asking me when/where it was because I didn't invite anybody, and I still had a decent showing =)... glad someone was willing to sit through a 2 hour ordeal to see me on stage...
